Take a scouting trip — you get 90 days visa-free per 180 in Cyprus, counted separately from Schengen (Cyprus isn't in it, as of July 2026) Check travel.state.gov / travel.gc.ca — the US advisory has been Level 3 since March 2026; decide your own comfort level Pick your route: Category F (€9,568/yr foreign income, permanent), the €300k fast-track 6(2), or the pink slip as a bridge — compare all four Shortlist areas with the Where to Live guide — Limassol costs roughly double Paphos on rent Build a monthly budget from the Cost of Living data — €2,000–3,000/month for a couple is the honest planning range Book a cross-border tax consultation — the 5% pension election and non-dom status are excellent, but IRA/RRIF characterisation needs a professional (read this first)

Phase 2 · 6–12 months out

Build the paper foundation

Open a Cypriot bank account and route pension income into it — CRMD wants to see the income trail (advisers suggest ~€15,000–20,000 on deposit; practice, not law) Request your FBI Identity History Summary (US) or RCMP certificate (Canada) and have it apostilled — they age; time it against your filing date Gather income evidence: Social Security/pension/CPP/OAS award letters, rental contracts, dividend statements, tax returns Apostille and translate marriage/birth certificates for any dependants Buy private health insurance — required for the permit, and your only cover until you hold permanent residence (GeSY rules); budget €1,000–3,000+/yr each at 50–70, indicative Secure accommodation in the government-controlled areas — rental contract or title deed

Phase 3 · Application

File form MIP1 with the CRMD in Nicosia — €500 fee, +€70 per person needing an Alien Registration Certificate If waiting in Cyprus: apply for the pink slip (€24,000/yr income requirement) — and remember it lapses after 90 consecutive days out of Cyprus Plan around a 12-month official processing time that often runs longer — don't sell the house on a best-case timeline Pets: ISO microchip → rabies shot ≥21 days before travel → EU health certificate endorsed by USDA-APHIS or CFIA Book flights — one stop via a European or Middle East hub into Larnaca or Paphos; the US State Department recommends entering via the southern airports/seaports

Phase 4 · Arrival & first 90 days

Become a resident, properly

Complete biometrics/registration with the CRMD when your permit is granted Register with GeSY on the HIO Beneficiary Portal once you hold permanent residence, then pick a personal doctor (step by step) Exchange your US/Canadian driving licence at the Road Transport Department — no test, €40, free at 65+ (Living guide) — and practise driving on the left Set up utilities, internet and mobiles (~€230/month for a couple, indicative) — and buy Type G adapters before your kettle reminds you Diarise your tax residency: 183 days makes you Cyprus tax resident — usually good news here; make the pension election annually (Tax & Finance) Mark the citizenship math in the calendar: 7 years cumulative residence + 12 continuous months + B1 Greek — start the Greek lessons early
