Phase 0 · Before anything else

Confirm you actually have a route

Accept the hard fact: Iceland has no retirement or passive-income visa — pensions, savings, and property qualify you for nothing Check the four real doors: remote-work visa (ISK 1,000,000/mo income, 180 days max), employer-sponsored work permit, parents-67+ family permit, or 90-day visits Check the family angle: an adult child legally living in Iceland unlocks the parents-67+ permit — the one true retiree route Check your ancestry: an EU/EEA passport through descent (Irish, Italian, German…) would give you EEA free-movement rights in Iceland that a US/CA passport never will If none of the above fit — read our Portugal, Spain, or Cyprus guides and keep Iceland for summers (90 days visa-free per 180)

Phase 1 · 12–18 months out

Decide with real numbers

Scout in the season that scares you — a January week teaches more than three Julys (4–5 hours of daylight, wind included) Build a budget from the Cost of Living data — Iceland runs 73.5% above the EU price average (Eurostat 2025); a couple should sketch ISK 700,000–900,000/month Stress-test the currency: your income is in dollars, your rent in krónur — model a 10–15% adverse FX move Book a cross-border tax consultation — Icelandic brackets run 31.49%–46.29% (2026) and there's no special expat regime; US citizens keep filing with the IRS If pets are coming: read the Living guide now — MAST requires an import permit (from ISK 39,633), vaccinations, titer test, and a mandatory 14-day quarantine

Phase 2 · 6–12 months out

Build the paper foundation

Remote-work visa route: confirm income evidence (ISK 1,000,000/mo single · 1,300,000 with family), employment with a foreign company, and that Iceland hasn't issued you a long-term visa in the last 12 months Work-permit route: your employer starts the application — labour-market test, contract, and translated qualifications (authorised translators only) Parents-67+ route: gather means-of-support evidence (ISK 129,976/month in 2026 if your child supports you; ISK 259,951 if self-supporting), your child's consent, and 6 months' health insurance (form D-106; fee ISK 110,000) Order criminal-record checks (FBI/RCMP) and arrange certified translations of anything not in English or a Scandinavian language Buy the health insurance your route requires — non-EEA residence permits demand private cover from an Iceland-authorised insurer for the first 6 months; the public system only starts after 6 months' registered residence Pets: apply to MAST ≥30 days ahead (realistically 3+ months), book the quarantine station, and schedule rabies titer (≥30 days post-vaccination) and leptospirosis shots

Phase 3 · 3–6 months out

Apply — on paper, by mail

Pay the processing fee by bank transfer first (remote-work visa: ISK 12,200/person) and keep the receipt for the file Mail the complete application to the Directorate of Immigration (Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur) — most Iceland applications are still paper; incomplete files stall by email round-trips While you wait (3–4 weeks for the remote-work visa; longer for permits): line up housing — the rental market is thin, so start before you land Plan the physical move: shipping to Iceland is expensive and slow; most movers bring far less than they planned Winter-proof your wardrobe budget — proper shell layers and studded-sole boots are line items, not jokes

Phase 4 · Arrival & first 6 months

Become a resident, properly

Residence-permit holders: complete registration — your kennitala (ID number) and legal domicile are set up via the Directorate of Immigration with Registers Iceland (skra.is) Open an Icelandic bank account once the kennitala exists (near-impossible without it) Diarise month 6: public health insurance (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands) starts automatically after 6 months' registered domicile — confirm your status on island.is Diarise month 6 again: your US/CA driving licence stops being valid — book theory + practical tests early (Living guide) Start Icelandic classes — daily life works in English, but community (and year-7 citizenship) doesn't Mark year 4 (permanent residency) and year 7 (citizenship) in the calendar — and remember remote-work-visa days never count Buy a pool pass. It's the cheapest great thing in Iceland, and it's where the neighbours are
