Phase 2 · 6–12 months out

Build the paper foundation

Work route: your employer initiates the permit — check the salary meets the current floor (reset every June; SEK 34,470 since 16 June 2026) and terms match collective agreements Family route: your sponsor verifies they meet the maintenance requirement — income after rent plus adequate housing EU long-term-resident route: confirm your EC/EU permit card from the first EU country is valid, and assemble pension and bank statements Gather civil documents (marriage/birth certificates) — Skatteverket will want them at registration; get certified translations if not in English or Swedish Arrange comprehensive health insurance to cover the gap before you're registered — unregistered patients pay full cost Line up first-year housing: realistic options are sublets, new-build rentals, or buying (open to foreigners; bostadsrätt purchases have no stamp duty) Pets: ISO microchip → rabies shot ≥21 days before travel → EU health certificate endorsed by USDA-APHIS or CFIA

Phase 3 · 0–6 months out

Apply, wait, and plan the landing

Submit the permit application from outside Sweden (online via Migrationsverket; biometrics at an embassy/consulate) — and check current waiting times before booking anything While you wait: plan the physical move — see Living for the driving-licence countdown and pet logistics Order Swedish theory-test study material in English if you'll drive — your US/CA licence dies one year after registration, and the full test process takes months Receive the permit decision and residence permit card — then book travel Notify your bank and brokerage of the move — and get cross-border advice before selling anything (capital-gains timing matters on both sides)

Phase 4 · Arrival & first 90 days

Become a resident, properly

Register your move at Skatteverket in week one (passport, permit card, civil documents) — this starts your personnummer Order the Skatteverket ID card (SEK 400) the day your personnummer arrives Open a Swedish bank account in person and get BankID — the single step that makes everything else work List yourself at a vårdcentral (health centre) and log into 1177 — your fees now cap at SEK 1,450/12 months (Healthcare guide) Choose an electricity supplier and set up home insurance (hemförsäkring — Swedes treat it as mandatory; landlords often require it) Diarise the clocks: driving-licence year (from registration), permanent-residence eligibility (route-dependent), and the 8-year citizenship horizon
