Sweden · Visas & Residency

Three ways in.
None of them "retiree".

Sweden has no visa for retirees or the self-funded — full stop. What it has: a work permit with a salary floor, family reunification, and one genuine own-means route that runs through five years in another EU country first. Here they are with 2026 numbers — no salesmanship.

The 2026 comparison

RouteWho it's forMoney requirement (2026)Leads to
Work permit People with a job offer from a Swedish employer (the employer starts the process) Salary of at least SEK 34,470/month (≈ $3,600) — 90% of the median, from 16 June 2026. Exempt shortage occupations: SEK 28,725 (75%) Permanent residence after working 4 of the past 7 years
Family ties Spouses/partners of someone living in Sweden The sponsor in Sweden must show income covering rent plus set living amounts, and adequate housing Residence track; permanent residence typically after 3+ years
EU long-term resident

Non-EU nationals who already hold EC/EU long-term-resident status from another EU country — the only own-means path Documents showing you can live on your own funds, "such as a pension from your country of origin" + accommodation costs. Fee SEK 1,500 Permit up to 5 years, renewable; but 75% of recent cases took up to 17 months to decide
Self-employment People with a viable business and industry experience Capital to run the business and support yourself (and family) for the first 2 years Permanent residence possible after 2 years if the business is stable
What about a visitor's permit? You can apply for a visitor's residence permit for stays over 90 days — usually up to 6 months, at most a year. But Migrationsverket is explicit: the purpose must be to visit, not to settle. No work, no population registration, no path to permanent residence. It is a long holiday, not a move.

After the permit: the residency timeline

Step 1 · Before you fly

Apply from abroad

Work and family permits are applied for before entering Sweden (online via Migrationsverket; biometrics at an embassy or consulate).

Step 2 · Arrival

Register at Skatteverket

With a permit of 1 year or more, register in the population register and get your personnummer — the key to everything else.

Step 3 · Year 2–5

Permanent residence

Employees: after working 4 of the past 7 years. Self-employed: after 2 years. Durable self-support required. EU long-term-resident status in Sweden: 5 years.

★ Step 4 · Year 8

Citizenship

Now 8 years' habitual residence (was 5, changed 6 June 2026, no grandfathering). Civics test from Aug 2026; language test by Oct 2027. Self-sufficiency required.

Reality check on timelines. Waiting times vary sharply by permit type. EU long-term-resident transfer applications have run up to 17 months for 75% of cases. Work permits for certified employers move much faster. Check Migrationsverket's live waiting-time tool before you plan around a date.
