Switzerland is filmed more than it is explained.
This is what is actually worth your time.

62 channels, accounts, podcasts, references and communities covering life in Switzerland in English, every figure checked on 18 September 2026. Two things shape this page. The first is that the visual layer is enormous and the practical layer is close to empty: nobody anywhere covers Swiss residence permits, Lex Koller or what health insurance costs a 62 year old on video in English. The second is that the country's main English forum died in 2024 and almost every list still recommends it. We checked. It is gone, and we say where the conversation went instead.

If you only watch four things

Start here

Four starting points, one from each format, because no single source covers this country. One couple who actually moved, one forum where permits and naturalisation get answered by people who filed them, one writer who publishes real numbers, and one podcast by two women who arrived as foreigners and stayed.

Aplins in the Alps

105,000 subscribers, and the only channel we found at scale run by people who made this exact move recently and film the consequences. The centre of gravity has drifted towards visiting rather than settling, which is where the money is, but the transport, seasons and cost videos are made by two people who pay Swiss prices every week rather than for a fortnight. Start with the Swiss Travel Pass video below: it is the clearest arithmetic anyone publishes on whether the pass is worth it for the way you will actually travel.

Swiss Forum

The successor to English Forum Switzerland, and the single most valuable community on this page. Read the numbers honestly, which is why we publish all of them. Its own statistics on 18 September 2026 gave 59,675 registered users, 1,988,631 posts and 139,725 topics, but most of that is the imported English Forum archive going back to 2006. The live community is 149 people active in the last seven days and 825 posts in that week. Small and real beats large and dead. Its Visas, Permits, Passports and Naturalization board holds over 18,000 topics, and there is a naturalisation applicant diary running past 2,200 posts.

The Poor Swiss

The deepest independent writing in English on Swiss money, and the only non-commercial source we found that walks through how mandatory health insurance actually works: deductibles, the insurance models, why the premium varies so much by canton. His health insurance guide carried a body byline of 5 July 2026 when we checked, which in this field is remarkably current. One limit worth knowing: he gives no premium table by age, so it will not tell a sixty-year-old what they will pay.

As Swiss As Possible

31 episodes, the latest on 4 September 2026, and the only independent, non-commercial podcast about actually living in Switzerland that is still publishing. Housing, costs, insurance, recycling, making friends as an adult, and the specific loneliness of the first two years. Two women who arrived as foreigners and are still working out the country, which is a more useful register for our readers than an expert explaining it.

YouTube

Ten channels, and that is the honest size of the English-language field. Six are people who live in Switzerland, two are official boards and two are photographers. Every subscriber count was read off the channel's own page on 18 September 2026 and every video below was confirmed by YouTube's oEmbed service to belong to the channel shown. What you will not find here is a channel explaining permits, health insurance or buying property, because after searching specifically for one we can tell you it does not exist in English.

81,100 subscribers. The format earns its place: one of them has to explain Switzerland to the other, so the things a Swiss person would never think to mention get said out loud. Heavy on trains and mountain transport, which for a reader who will not own a car here is more practical than it sounds. Posting every few days as of 18 September 2026.

33,300 subscribers and the closest thing on this page to our own readers: two northern Europeans in their later years who moved, stayed, and now drive and walk around the country filming it. Mountain passes, day trips and village walks, in English, at a pace that assumes you are not in a hurry. The last upload before we checked was two weeks earlier.

Twenty years in the country and the most practical walking content in English anywhere: which mountain is reachable on public transport, what the path is actually like underfoot, how long the day really takes. 38,700 subscribers. A Swiss person explaining his own country to English speakers, which is a different and useful thing from a foreigner explaining it. Be clear about what it is not: the framing is travel throughout and we found nothing on his channel or site about living here, so use it to decide whether you like the place rather than to work out how to stay in it.

162,000 subscribers and half-hour train cab rides filmed from the driver's window. That sounds like a niche and it is the most useful niche on this page: if you are choosing between cantons, watching an uncut run from Domodossola to Locarno tells you more about what the journey and the landscape are really like than any guide. Titles and descriptions are in English; there is almost no narration, which is the point.

126,000 subscribers. Landscape and nature films with English titles and minimal narration. The reason it is here rather than in a list of pretty channels is the video below: a plain account of what the 2026 drought did to the Rhine Falls and Lake Constance. Switzerland's climate is changing faster than its marketing, and a photographer who returns to the same places year after year is a better witness to that than a tourism board.

Zurich Tourism, the city's official board. Destination marketing

54,900 subscribers from only 46 long films, so the output is sparse and campaign-driven. It is here because Zurich is where most English speakers land and the city's own board explains its districts better than anyone else bothers to. The newest uploads are short vertical clips; the card below carries the most recent proper film, from August 2026.

Instagram and TikTok

Eighteen Instagram accounts and five on TikTok. Twelve of the eighteen are official tourism boards, which is the true shape of Switzerland's English social layer rather than a shortcut on our part: only four people at listable scale are documenting their own life here, and all four are in Zurich. Every follower count was read off the profile itself on 18 September 2026. The five TikTok figures are Social Blade approximations, because TikTok does not serve us profiles. Handles do not match across platforms here, so each card carries the exact one.

A British woman living in Zurich who has run NewInZurich.com for years. Takes brand and hotel collaborations, which are visible in the feed

88,300 followers, read off the profile on 18 September 2026, and the single best account on this page for our readers: a Briton who moved, stayed, and now publishes what is open, what is worth booking and what the city expects of you. Posting daily. If you want one account to follow while you decide whether Zurich is liveable rather than visitable, this is it.

55,300 followers. Nine years of one person's life in Zurich, which is long enough that the account has stopped being about arriving and started being about living. Strong on where to eat, where to walk and where to go for a weekend, with saved collections by canton. She has not published her nationality anywhere we could find, so we describe her as a long-settled foreign resident rather than guess.

42,500 followers, and unusually for an account this size the comment count is high relative to the like count, which is what a real community looks like rather than a bought one. Harry Meier, The Curated Zurich Guide

Harry Meier, thirteen years in Zurich. Openly takes collaborations and the feed shows them

192,000 followers and the strongest engagement of any Switzerland account we measured, by a wide margin. Food, wellness and culture in Zurich, presented as guides rather than posts. His bio does not state whether he is Swiss or a long-settled foreigner and we are not going to invent an answer, but the recommendations are consistently local rather than touristic.

Markus Manfredi, Swiss Around

Markus Manfredi, a Swiss photographer. Substantially commercial: many posts carry paid-partnership disclosures, marked Anzeige

2.9 million followers, the largest Switzerland account of any kind, and the work is his own photography rather than reposts, which is what separates it from the aggregator accounts we left off. Treat it as beautifully made advertising: the places are real and the routes are worth noting, but a good share of the posts are paid for by the destinations in them.

The Swiss Outdoor Collective

Eleven named friends from Switzerland posting as a collective. Runs a shop and paid photography workshops, and carries brand partnerships

199,000 followers. Alpine days out photographed by people who do them, including a lot of the shoulder-season and bad-weather Switzerland that the boards never show. It is a collective rather than a person, so no individual is accountable for what is posted, and it sells things. Listed because the picture of mountain life here is more honest than the official version.

The national board's own account, confirmed from its profile: Morgartenstrasse 5, Zurich, linking to linktr.ee/myswitzerland

Note the handle. @switzerlandtourism and @myswitzerland both exist on Instagram and neither is the live official account: the first has under 2,000 followers and stopped posting around 2019.

Zurich Tourism

Zurich Tourism's official account, confirmed from its own bio and from zuerich.com

Bern Welcome

Bern Tourism, trading as Bern Welcome. Confirmed from bern.com

76,700 followers. Mixed German and English, and the card says so because you will notice. Bern is the capital, it is markedly cheaper than Zurich or Geneva, and almost nobody publishes about it in English, so a board account is what there is. Note the handle is @ilove_bern, not @visitbern.

Basel Tourism

Basel Tourism's official account, confirmed from basel.com

158,000 followers, bilingual English and German. Basel is a serious cultural city on the French and German borders, with the museums to prove it and none of the lump-sum tax arrangements the resort cantons offer. The handle is @baselswitzerland, not @visitbasel.

Ticino Turismo

Ticino Tourism's official account, confirmed from ticino.ch

106,000 followers. Posts alternate between Italian and English, so expect roughly half of it to need translating. Ticino is the Italian-speaking canton and the one our readers ask about most after Vaud: palm trees, lakes, Milan closer than Zurich, and the steepest health-insurance premium rise in the country in 2026.

You can still use it, and it is worth the twenty minutes, but you will be working in German. Nobody independent has published an English walkthrough of it, which is a gap we intend to fill.

Federal Department of Finance on lump-sum taxation

The federal finance department. Official

The official English explanation of the forfait fiscal, the arrangement that makes Switzerland viable for some wealthy arrivals: available to foreign nationals making Switzerland their tax domicile for the first time, or after ten years away, who are not working here. It names the cantons that abolished it, including Zurich after a 2009 popular vote, and those that tightened it. Note the date on the page: published 10 April 2024, citing figures from the end of 2018.

GOV.UK, Living in Switzerland

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Official

The best-maintained page on this list, and it is British rather than Swiss. Visas, work, healthcare, driving, tax, pensions, property and retiring, plus the UK-Swiss Citizens' Rights Agreement for anyone resident before 1 January 2021 and the actual permit renewal periods: one year for an L, five for a B, ten for a C. Published 26 June 2013, last updated 24 December 2025. Useful to Americans and Canadians too, with the obvious caveats.

US Embassy Bern, local resources

The United States Embassy in Bern. Official

Listed as the consular contact point, and listed with a warning. The practical guidance page covers banking, housing, medical services and taxes but says nothing about residence permits, Social Security or health insurance, carries no date anywhere, and its most recent population figure is from a 1992 census. If you are American and planning this move, your own government's practical advice about Switzerland is decades out of date. Use it for passports and appointments and nothing else.

Government of Canada, Switzerland

Global Affairs Canada. Official

Impeccably maintained and almost useless for our purposes, which is itself worth knowing. The page was modified on 17 September 2026, the day before we checked, and covers entry requirements, ETIAS, safety, laws and dual citizenship. It contains nothing on residence, tax or relocation beyond one line telling you to exchange your driving licence. Canadians are the worst served of the three nationalities this site is written for.

Communities

Nine places where English speakers in Switzerland talk to each other, and a correction that matters. English Forum Switzerland, the country's main English-language forum for close to twenty years, was closed by its owner in 2024. On 18 September 2026 the domain does not resolve at all. Its community moved to a successor that is alive and answering questions today, and that is the first card below. Every forum figure here was read from the forum's own public statistics on the day.

Community59,675 registered, 149 active in the last week

Swiss Forum

Volunteer run, on Discourse. The admin posts as Phil_MCR and category moderators are named members. No agency or broker ownership we could find, and the commercial category is effectively empty

Mustachian Post Community

Attached to Marc Pittet's financial education business, which sells a book and two paid programmes. He states he is not a licensed adviser

The liveliest English-language Swiss forum we measured: its own statistics on 18 September 2026 gave 3,655 users and 168,537 posts, with 391 people active in the last seven days. That is more current activity than a forum sixteen times its size. It matters to our readers for one specific thing: the annual health insurance thread, where ordinary members compare real premiums across Agrisano, CSS, Sanitas, Visana, Helsana, Assura and the rest, and report the increases they were actually quoted. The switching window opens each autumn and the thread opens with it.

British Residents' Association of Switzerland

A non-profit association under the Swiss Civil Code, founded 1946, with an elected national chair, a council and a regional chair for each region. Formal interlocutor with the British Embassy in Berne. No commercial interest found

Eighty years old, run by its members, and the best real-world fit on this page for a British reader in their sixties. Six regions cover the whole country including Ticino and Grisons, and the events calendar ran to 26 January 2027 when we checked, with museum visits, brunches, book clubs and trips already dated through autumn 2026. Membership is 20 francs to join and 65 a year single or 90 a couple. Open to British, Commonwealth and Irish citizens and both genders. It publishes no membership figure and we are not going to estimate one.

CommunityFounded 1957, events dated to October 2026

American International Club of Zurich

Founded 1957, all-volunteer, with a named 2026 executive committee. Carries a small number of sponsor logos and is explicitly non-political

Open to all nationalities and all genders, which matters because most of the long-standing English-speaking clubs in Zurich are women only. Dated 2026 activity when we checked included a Friday social on 18 September, a lecture on 1 October and a members' welcome reception on 8 October. No membership figure is published. If you are a man arriving in Zurich without a company behind you, this and the British Residents' Association are close to the whole list.

American International Club of Geneva

A member club, president Ron Banks, open to all nationalities and genders. Corporate partners include an international law firm, a relocation company and a Big Four practice, which we are naming because you should know

The Geneva equivalent, and Geneva's only mixed-gender English-speaking club we could verify. Dated 2026 activity included a lecture on the Swiss political model on 23 September and a charity golf tournament on 2 October. No membership figure published. The sponsor list means you will meet people who sell relocation and legal services at its events. That is not disqualifying, but it is worth knowing before you take advice at a drinks party.

CommunityFounded 1931, women only

American Women's Club of Zurich

Founded 1931, a member of the FAWCO federation, runs a community service arm. No commercial interest found. Women only

Ninety-five years old and by some distance the busiest club we found: dated activities on 19, 21 and 22 September 2026 alone, covering running, bridge, fitness and yoga. Despite the name it is open to English speakers of all nationalities living in the Zurich area, not just Americans. It is a women's club, which we state plainly because we could find no equivalent men's club anywhere in Switzerland. No membership figure is published.

CommunityAbout 400 members, self-reported

Zurich International Women's Association

Founded 1985, a Swiss association. Women only. No commercial interest found

Around 400 members and more than fifty interest groups, which is the figure the association itself publishes, undated, so treat it as a current claim rather than an audited number. The reason it is here is the interest groups: for somebody arriving without colleagues, fifty small standing groups is a faster route into a social life than any number of one-off events. One caveat we will not hide: the events calendar sits behind a member login, so we could not verify dated 2026 activity from outside.

Glocals

A long-running Swiss expat social platform. Monetised: it runs a deals business and carries housing and real-estate classifieds. Ownership is not disclosed on the site

167,534 members according to its own counter on 18 September 2026, which is self-reported and certainly counts accounts that have not been used in a decade, given the site dates to the 2000s. Events and posts were current to September 2026. Structurally it covers Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Basel, Bern and Lucerne, but the live content is heavily Geneva-weighted, which makes it the most useful general social venue on the French-speaking side.

r/Switzerland

Reddit's general Switzerland community, moderated by volunteers

Listed without a member figure, and we want to say why rather than quote one from a third party. Reddit refused every route we have on the day we built this page, so unlike the other communities here we could not read its size from the source. What it is good for is the daily reality check: Swiss residents answering foreigners bluntly about rents, insurance premiums and what a salary actually buys. The related subreddits worth trying are r/AskSwitzerland and r/SwissPersonalFinance.

How this list was made

We searched YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Apple Podcasts and the main Swiss and expat forums for English-language sources covering moving to and living in Switzerland, then kept the ones with a real audience and evidence they are still publishing. We favoured people who live here over people who visited, and material aimed at adults planning a permanent move. Anything with no upload or post in twelve months was dropped. Language removed more candidates in Switzerland than anywhere else we have covered: this is a country of four languages and almost everything at scale is in German, French or Italian.

Audience figures. Every YouTube subscriber count was read off the channel's own page on YouTube on 18 September 2026. Every Instagram follower count was read off the profile itself on the same day. Every video on this page was confirmed by YouTube's oEmbed service to belong to the channel shown, a check that has caught mismatches on several of our country pages. Podcast episode counts and latest episode dates came from Apple's lookup service rather than the rendered Apple Podcasts page, which returns dates that are wrong by one to two years. The five TikTok figures are Social Blade approximations, because TikTok does not serve us profiles directly. Forum statistics were read from each forum's own public data on 18 September 2026.

Upload dates. Three of the ten YouTube cards carry a date taken from the channel's official feed and are exact. YouTube does not publish a feed for the other seven, so for those we read the age YouTube itself displays and converted it, which means a card saying August 2026 is accurate to the month rather than the day. Four cards deliberately do not show the channel's newest upload, because the newest was a short clip or off the subject, and each of those cards says so.

Two things we could not get, and did not invent. Reddit refused us access on the day we built this page, from every route we have, so the single Reddit card carries no member count. Facebook publishes no member figure for any Swiss expat group and no dated third-party source publishes one either, so this page lists no Facebook group at all rather than quote a number somebody guessed.

What is not here, and why that matters. We went looking specifically for English-language coverage of Swiss residence permits, the non-EU retirement route, Lex Koller restrictions on foreigners buying property, and how American, British and Canadian pension income is taxed once you are resident. On video there is nothing. In writing, every detailed source is an immigration law firm, a relocation agency, a residency-by-investment outfit or a tax practice earning a fee on the answer. We have said so on the page rather than pad it with their content marketing.

Rejected, so nobody has to repeat the work. Two brand-new faceless YouTube channels are currently publishing Swiss cost-of-living and retirement videos at high speed: one joined on 8 September 2026 with four videos and a couple of hundred total views, the other on 13 August 2026. Both use the format that ranks. There is also a Switzerland Travel Podcast that publishes daily and belongs to an operator running around a hundred format-identical country shows with invented local hosts, which we have now identified in five countries. None of them is listed here.

Nothing on this page is paid for and no creator was contacted for inclusion. No creator imagery is copied to our servers: every embed is the platform's own. Where a source sells something, whether that is a guide, a course, financial advice or a relocation service, the card says so.
