Phase 0 · Before anything else

Phase 1 · 12–18 months out

Decide with real numbers

Take a scouting trip — you get 90 days visa-free per rolling 180 (the EES system has been counting your days since October 2025) If work is your route: start the Danish job hunt — international-facing sectors (pharma, shipping, energy, IT) hire in English; check the Positive Lists too Build a monthly budget from the Cost of Living data — Denmark runs 40% above the EU average price level (Eurostat 2025) Book a consultation with a cross-border tax adviser — before you trigger anything (IRAs, 401(k)s, Roths, and RRIFs have Danish traps) Shortlist cities with the Where to Live guide — your job will probably pick the city for you Start Danish lessons — permanent residency needs Prøve i Dansk 2 (B1) and citizenship needs Prøve i Dansk 3 (~B2)

Phase 2 · 3–6 months out

Apply, from home

Sign the Danish employment contract (SIRI wants it no more than 30 days old at application) and confirm the package clears the 2026 threshold in liquid salary + pension — perks don't count Create the case order ID on nyidanmark.dk and pay the SIRI fee (DKK 6,810, 2026); family members apply alongside (DKK 3,080 each) Record biometrics within 14 days of applying — at a Danish mission or application centre in the US/Canada While SIRI processes (~1 month; Fast-track 0–30 days): give notice, plan shipping, and decide about the car — Danish registration tax reaches 150%, so most people don't bring one Pets: ISO microchip → rabies shot ≥21 days before travel → EU health certificate endorsed by USDA-APHIS or CFIA — and check Denmark's banned-breeds list Line up housing for arrival — Copenhagen rentals move fast; expect up to 3 months' deposit + 3 months prepaid rent

Phase 3 · Arrival & first 30 days

Get the number that runs everything

Register your address and get your CPR number at the municipality or an International Citizen Service centre — free, and everything else depends on it Receive your yellow health card (~2–3 weeks by post) — you're now covered: free GP and hospital care (Healthcare guide) Set up MitID (digital ID) and check your digital post — official mail is electronic and mandatory Open a Danish bank account (CPR + MitID + permit) — your salary generally must be paid into it Get your tax card on skat.dk (forskudsopgørelse) before your first payday — or the default withholding will sting

Phase 4 · First 180 days and beyond

Settle in properly

Exchange your US/Canadian driving licence at Borgerservice — no test, but do it within 180 days of residence (Living guide) Join an A-kasse (unemployment insurance) and consider supplementary health insurance for dental and glasses Enroll in municipal Danish classes — subsidised for new residents, and the clock toward the residency language tests is running US citizens: diarise the IRS filing (FEIE $132,900 for 2026) and FBAR; Canadians: confirm your departure-tax filings are done Mark year 8 (permanent residency — or year 4 fast-track) and year 9 (citizenship) in the calendar Buy a bicycle. This is not a joke — it's how Denmark works.
